The booking through our platform
In order for your shipment to be processed, you must enter your shipment details on our platform and then select the appropriate shipping method. IBC containers are available in sizes from 300-3000 l. It is important to specify the exact size/base area and weight if you want to have IBC containers transported with Cargoboard.
Preparing IBC containers for transport
After you have booked your shipment and received the shipping documents, it's time to start packaging.
From a total weight of 30 kg the IBC containers must be transported on a pallet. You will find out how to proceed in concrete terms in the lower part of this page.
Collection of IBC containers
For the shipment of the IBC container, our freight forwarders usually collect the goods from the curb.
For this takeover, it is mandatory that the IBC containers to be transported weighing 30 kg or more are either self-supporting or placed on a pallet for transport.
Delivery of the IBC containers
Like the pickup, the delivery of the IBC Container is free curbside. For this purpose, our forwarders unload the shipment at the delivery address and obtain the signature for acceptance.

How much does it cost to have an IBC tank transported?
Transporting your IBC container can vary greatly in price. On the one hand, this depends on the pick-up and destination. On the other hand, the number of containers as well as their total weight and the selected shipping method play an important role.
To get exact information about the costs incurred, we recommend our cost calculator. If you want to have IBC containers transported, the calculator will give you an individual calculation of the costs in real time after entering all the shipment data on our platform.
How many IBC containers fit on one truck?
If you want to transport a larger number of IBC containers, information about the capacity of a truck is important.
The standard size of an IBC container with a capacity of about 1000 liters is identical to an industrial pallet. The dimensions here are 1200 × 1000 mm.
Should a truck be fully filled with IBCs of this size in a single layer, they can transport between 12 and 28 IBC containers depending on the truck model. In addition, the weight must be taken into account.
When is it allowed to stack IBC containers for transport?
Not every IBC container is stackable - the decisive factor is the construction. There is a pallet underneath the container, which must have recesses on the bottom so that the IBC container is stackable. This is designed to allow the container to snap into place when stacked. These pallets/IBC containers are called nestable pallets.
The manufacturer's data sheets state whether the IBC is suitable for stacking. You should only stack IBCs of the same construction before you let us transport them. In the data sheet you will also get all the information about the permissible load.
The general rule for empty plastic IBC containers is that a maximum of 4 may be stacked on top of each other. For filled containers, a maximum of two pieces during one transport. Here, however, the weight must be considered as the first factor.
What are the safety measures when transporting IBC containers?
As with any truck load, the containers should be secured on the loading area, so that they cannot slip during the journey. IBC containers are used to transport a wide variety of liquids and substances such as foodstuffs, paints, fuels as well as acids and alkalis. Somewhat less frequently also free-flowing substances such as granules.
If the contents are declared as dangerous goods, it must be noted on the IBC container. Dangerous goods may only be transported by qualified personnel and must be marked accordingly. If you have any questions here, please contact our service team.
How do I optimally prepare my IBC containers for transport?
To ensure that your IBC tank transport goes smoothly, you should consider the following points:
- Only use IBC containers for your product that are also suitable for this ingredient in terms of construction. If it is an aggressive product, then only brand-new containers should be used.
- The total weight of an IBC container including any packaging must be taken into account. It must not be higher than the pallet jack or tail lift allows.
- Place the containers to be collected in a way they can be easily loaded.
- Ensure that any hazard warnings and the total weight are marked on the outside.

Are IBC containers insured when transported by Cargoboard?
If we are to transport an IBC container for you, then it depends on your chosen transport option how and whether your IBC tank is insured. By default, liability is only up to the amount provided by the rules according to the German Freight Forwarders' Standard Terms and Conditions (ADSP). For cost-intensive goods, we therefore recommend our shipping insurance.
Custom conditions for the transport of IBC containers
From as few as 10 regular shipments per month, frequent shippers benefit from custom conditions with Cargoboard.
