Particularities for shipments to Portugal
Portugal has been member of the European Union since 1986, which is why the free movement of goods can take place to a large extent. This means that in most cases you can ship goods to Portugal without customs issues or export documents.
If you plan to ship your goods to the Azores, it is a special case under customs law, because although the islands politically belong to Portugal and thus to the EU, they are a special tax territory. Accordingly, when shipping to these islands, you need to prepare the following documents:
- Commercial invoice
- Export documents
- T2LF
If you wish, we will be happy to prepare the documents for you after the booking of your transport. To do so, simply select the add-on product "export declaration & customs documents" in the booking process.
Portugal as an economic area
Portugal's economy is particularly characterized by steel processing, agriculture, and the automotive and pulp industries. Among the most important trade partners are Germany and Spain, with a large number of imports of auto parts and machinery. The largest companies within the country are notable banks and companies operating in the construction industry.
The traffic infrastructure of Portugal
The Portuguese road network is well-developed by EU standards and extends over 82,900 kilometers. The important routes are covered by toll autoestradas(highways).
The main highways include:
- The A2: It connects the city of Porto in the north with Spain
- The A3: It is considered the most important highway in Portugal, as it connects Lisbon with the Algarve region and the Alentejo region
- The A6: It creates a link between the southeast of Lisbon to Spain, through the region of Alentejo
