Great Britain as an economic area
The UK economy is highly deregulated by international standards, meaning that the government exerts little to no influence through regulations and standards. The tertiary sector is the most productive, accounting for almost 80% of GDP. The financial sector is of particular relevance, as London, with its numerous banks and stock exchanges, is to be regarded as an international financial center. Since 2000, there has been a steady decline in the industry, as major companies relocated the company and production base to other countries. Only exports play a more important role in the countries' overall economies. Fishing is still a relevant business sector in agriculture and creates numerous jobs in coastal towns, especially in local fish processing plants.
The transport infrastructure in Great Britain
The road network of Great Britain has a length of about 388,000 km, of which about 3500 km are freeways. In addition, there are some four-lane trunk roads, which are very similar to highways in the German area. Compared to the rest of Europe, there are few toll roads, but there are some bridges that require payment to cross. There is also an environmental zone in the London area, for which trucks and vans require prior registration to avoid fines. Nowadays, the British peninsula can be reached quite easily through the Eurotunnel. Previously, a boat trip or air travel was unavoidable. The largest airport is London Heathrow with the highest number of passengers in Europe.
